Martorell, 01-09-2020 - The CUPRA Leon Competición will be racing at the WTCR 2020. CUPRA’s new racecar is going to participate in the upcoming season of the world touring car cup with the Hungarian team Zengő Motorsport, which will feature three cars and the CUPRA driver Mikel Azcona.

Azcona will join young newcomer Bence Boldizs and the Hungarian champion Gábor Kismarty-Lechner at the wheel of the CUPRA Leon Competición. The sporty brand’s new racecar has already proved its competitiveness on the tracks of the TCR Italy and the TCR Scandinavia. A month and a half after its world debut in Monza, drivers such as Salvatore Tavano (Scuderia del Girasole by CUPRA Racing) or Robert Dahlgren (PWR Racing) raced the CUPRA touring car to the top of the leaderboard in their respective championships.

Following the announcement of the team, CUPRA Racing director Jaime Puig said: “In 2020 CUPRA will once again be represented at the WTCR by a world class partner such as Zengő Motorsport, a team that shares our passion for competition, for touring car racing and for promoting young talent. We are delighted to have Mikel Azcona racing with them, after his fantastic debut in the championship last year, and we are also looking forward to seeing the CUPRA Leon Competición in action at the WTCR, a car that in just one month on the tracks has demonstrated its enormous potential.”

Azcona returns to the WTCR

While the Hungarians Boldizs and Kismarty-Lechner will be making their WTCR debut in 2020, this will be Azcona’s second season in a competition where he finished sixth in the driver’s standings last year, after taking four podium finishes and winning one.

The CUPRA and Zengő Motorsport racer added: “I’m very pleased that we have finally reached an agreement with Zengő Motorsport. I began preparing for 2020 as soon as last season ended in Malaysia. I know that the WTCR is the highest level touring car championship and I plan to take this opportunity as if it were the last one. In addition, we have the new CUPRA Leon Competición, which is a car that is made for this championship.”

An experienced team

Zengő Motorsport Team Manager Zoltán Zengő pointed out that “Mikel is a young driver, but he already has a lot of experience, and we hope to achieve good results and many successes with him. It’s going to be a very intense season, with a lot of work on a logistics level, but we’re looking forward to getting on the track to compete against the other teams.”

The 2020 season of the WTCR kicks off on the weekend of 12 and 13 September in Belgium’s Zolder circuit. The World Touring Car Cup will then travel to the Nürburgring, Slovakia Ring, Hungaroring, Aragon and Adria to complete a total of 16 races until the end of the championship on 15 November.

CUPRA Leon Competición

Developed to compete in the TCR series and in endurance races around the world, the new racecar is equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that delivers 340 PS at 6800 RPM and a torque of 410 Nm mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox. The brand-new competition model CUPRA accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 260 km/h. Compared to the previous generation CUPRA TCR, the CUPRA Leon Competición combines the brand’s new bodywork and a chassis geometry which has been specifically designed for the model, reducing weight, providing rigidity and enabling greater customisation for each team and driver.
