At the European Parliament’s confirmation hearings, the EPP Group’s Mairead McGuinness, Parliament First Vice-President, discussed her 16 years of experience as an MEP to become the EU’s new Commissioner for financial services. Commission Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis, a former EPP Group MEP who already leads the Commission on economic policy, demonstrated his readiness to take on the Trade Commissioner portfolio as well. This as the EU negotiates a post-Brexit trade deal with the UK, and as the EU prepares to propose reform at the WTO. Parliament chiefs will consider the outcome of the hearings on 6 October, followed by a full parliamentary vote the next day.
