Korean short track speed skaters win first medals for host nation at Winter Youth Olympics Gangwon 2024

20 January 2024 - There was success for host nation the Republic of Korea on the opening day of competition at the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Gangwon 2024 thanks to the short track speed skaters in the Men’s 1500 metres.

Jaehee Joo took gold in a thrilling seven-man final, taking the lead with only one lap to go. The excited home crowd at the Gangneung Oval saw another home skater Yousung Kim take bronze. Xinzhe Zhang of China won the silver medal.

Korean athletes have a proud track record in speed skating and have high hopes for more at these fourth Winter Youth Olympic Games, the first YOG to take place in Asia.

Gangwon 2024 runs until February 1, with more than 1800 athletes from 78 NOCs taking part. The Winter Youth Olympic Games is filmed for live television and digital streaming on Olympic Channel via Olympics.com and the Olympics app, with full session replays and highlights also available.
