Future of the Olympic Games on display at the IOC Session

20 March 2025 - In the span of a morning, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Members today had a comprehensive overview of the future of the Olympic Games all the way through to 2032. The Organising Committees for the Olympic Winter Games (OCOGs) Milano Cortina 2026 and French Alps 2030, and the Olympic Games LA28 and Brisbane 2032, all reported to the IOC Sessiontaking place in Costa Navarino, Greece, on their progress and preparations.

Milano Cortina 2026

As the next Games on the horizon, Milano Cortina 2026 was the first OCOG to present. It reported on its successful test events this winter, including an ISU Short Track World Cup and a figure skating competition in Milan, and an FIS Aerials and Moguls World Cup in the mountains of Livigno.

The growing excitement around the Olympic Winter Games in Italy was demonstrated by the partial but impressive results of key programmes such as ticketing and volunteering.

After the first two phases of sales, more than 600,000 of the total 1.5 million tickets have already been sold (with a large group of buyers aged between 25 and 34), while some 100,000 people have already applied for the 18,000 volunteer positions – over 50 per cent of them less than 35 years old.

The progress of venue preparations was also addressed, and the Organising Committee confirmed that the Cortina Sliding Centre pre-homologation is expected to take place next week.

Finally, recent commercial partnerships announced, including in the automotive category, and others being finalised were inspiring confidence in achieving the EUR 500 million target in domestic sponsorship revenue.

LA28

The Organising Committee for LA28 started its presentation by expressing solidarity to all those affected by the wildfires earlier this year, and reporting on discussions about opportunities to further engage its partners and the broader community to evolve the role LA28 can play in the recovery of Los Angeles.

LA28 team members have already volunteered more than 230 hours since the start of the fires in January, to support those impacted by the fires. The LA28 team is also working towards launching its volunteer programme later this year. This would mean that the volunteer programme could have an impact in the years leading up to the Games, in addition to at Games time.

As for the progress achieved since the Olympic Games Paris 2024, there was special mention of the collaboration with all levels of government – federal, state, county and city – and Olympic Movement stakeholders on key initiatives to be finalised soon, such as the Olympic venues masterplan, stakeholder accommodation allocation and the ticketing strategy. There has also been IOC support on the ground in Los Angeles to help LA28 set its course for success.

Commercially, LA28 continues to experience the positive impacts of Paris 2024, as momentum with the domestic partnership programme is continuing to build. Last year and in the first two months of this year, nine agreements have been announced, with others in the pipeline that are expected to soon get the Organising Committee to 80 per cent of its goal of USD 2.5 billion in sponsorship revenue.

144th IOC Session Report on the XXVI Olympic Winter Games, French Alps 2030 by the organizing Committee The Romanos - Costa Navarino

French Alps 2030

Following the creation of the Organising Committee, the appointment of Olympic champion Edgar Grospiron as its President a month ago, and its first report to the IOC Executive Board (EB) on MondayFrench Alps 2030 delivered its inaugural presentation to the IOC Session.

The focus of the presentation was on outlining the priority projects on which the OCOG has already started working, with the aim of completing them this year.

One of these is the French Alps 2030 vision and the legacy to be left for the local populations and the future of the Olympic Winter Games. This will be reflected during the handover segment in Verona, Italy, at the Closing Ceremony of the Milano Cortina 2026 Games in February next year.

The venue masterplan is another crucial aspect of preparations, and the Organising Committee has set a deadline of 23 June to finalise this, as it is a crucial milestone for establishing the budget.

Contacts with prospective commercial partners have already been initiated, with the goal of having some on board by summer 2025.

As it was the case for the report to the IOC EB, the French Sports Minister and former Paris 2024 Executive Director of Impact and Legacy, Marie Barsacq, joined the presentation.

In addition to reconfirming the commitment of the French government, she outlined the main principles on which the project will be built: sporting success, the hospitality of the French Alps territories and a sustainable legacy for the mountain regions and the Winter Games.

Brisbane 2032

The Olympic Games Brisbane 2032 progress report was centred around learnings from Paris 2024, milestone achievements, growing the Organising Committee, Games infrastructure delivery and priorities ahead.

Brisbane 2032 President Andrew Liveris and CEO Cindy Hook outlined the accomplishments to date – led by Brisbane 2032’s Strategy and Games Plan, with progress well underway.

Brisbane 2032 summarised the foundational planning priorities to be delivered before LA28, including the delivery of the Games vision, emblems and brand system, progressing the venue masterplan and sports programmes, preparing and launching commercial and procurement offerings, and continuing to deliver significant stakeholder engagement activities across Queensland.

An update was also provided on the Queensland Government’s independent infrastructure review taking place to define the best investments to meet the needs of the Queensland region and population. The review’s recommendations will be made public next week, and the Brisbane 2032 organisers will consider the implications for the Games venue masterplan.

The recently formed Organising Committee for the Olympic Winter Games 2034 in Salt Lake City-Utah provided a written report to the IOC Session.
