France and Switzerland take Snowboard Cross Gold Medals on opening day of Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024

20 January 2024 - Jonas Chollet (FRA) and Noemie Wiedmer (SUI) won the snowboard cross gold medals at the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Gangwon 2024 on the day Brazil celebrated its first ever Winter YOG medal thanks to Zion Bethonico’s bronze.

Chollet, the youngest competitor in the Big Final, led for most of the race to finish clear of Anthony Shelly (CAN). Bethonico (BRA) beat Boden Gerry (USA) to a historic third place.

In the women’s Big Final France were denied another gold by Wiedmer, who held off the challenge of the French pair Maja-Li Iafrate Danielsson (silver) and Lea Casta (bronze). Abbey Wilson (AUS) finished fourth.

Gangwon 2024 runs until 1 February, with more than 1,800 athletes from 78 NOCs taking part. The Winter Youth Olympic Games is filmed for live television and digital streaming on the Olympic Channel via Olympics.com and the Olympics app, with full session replays and highlights also available.
