01 February 2024 - Great Britain’s formidable curlers have won their second straight gold at the Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024, the last medal event of the Games in Korea.
The pair of Callie Soutar, 15, and 16-year-old Ethan Brewster beat Denmark 7-6 to win the mixed doubles at the Gangneung Curling Centre. They seized control of the final on the fifth of eight ends by scoring three points to move into the lead.
The young British pair had beaten Sweden 6-5 in the semi-final earlier on the final day of competition. The USA won the bronze medal match, beating Sweden 7-4.
Britain’s Mixed Doubles gold followed their triumph in the Mixed team event earlier in the Games, when they beat Denmark 7-5 in the final. It means a perfect record in curling at Gangwon 2024 for Team GB, whose two other golds at the Games came from skier Zak Carrick-Smith, the first British alpine skier on the podium at any Olympic Winter Games.
Team GB’s curlers were in the best possible hands. Chef de Mission Eve Muirhead competed in curling at four Olympic Winter Games, winning gold at Beijing 2022
Gangwon 2024 featured more than 1,800 athletes from 78 NOCs. Full session replays and highlights are available via Olympics.com and the Olympics app.
