Dean, Scott, Richards Combine to Land Relay Gold

Release Date: 28 Jul 2021

Great Britain confirmed their dominance in the 200m division by running away with the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Speedo stars Tom Dean, Duncan Scott and Matt Richards teamed up with James Guy to finish in 6:58.58, setting a new European record in the process. Such was the impressive nature of the swim, the quartet were an agonising 0.03 away from breaking the long-standing world record.

The win makes Tom Dean a double Olympic champion after his win in the individual 200m freestyle yesterday. Dean edged out Scott on that occasion, but the Scotsman got his redemption as he swam the fastest leg of the whole race to anchor the team to glory.

However, the star of the race was 18-year-old Matt Richards. With Britain level with USA after the first two legs from Dean and Guy, Richards entered the race and delivered a display way beyond his years to pull clear of his rivals and leave Scott with the crucial task of bringing home the medal.
